Good things are meant to be simply beautiful. In art, in fashion, in writing, in sports, in research, and in so many other things, we use beauty only as the means by which to compete. And yet, that kind of thinking punishes people for participating for participations sake only. If I’m not striving to prove myself to myself, or prove myself to the world, then what is left when I do what I love? Only what I care about and the beauty that was already there. Using good things to prove our worth is the pursuit of vanity.
